A Lighthouse of Ontario

24.7 Scotch Bonnet Island (Ruins) (ON 23S)

A low rocky outcropping, virtually submerged at times, Scotch Bonnet Island represented a real hazard to mariners coasting along Lake Ontario’s northern shore. To mark the hazard a limestone tower and dwelling were established on the island in 1856. Automated with an acetylene system in 1912, the lighthouse was abandoned. Time has not been good to the light, and it is in an advanced state of decay. Located three miles from the mainland, a private or charter boat is the only way to see this light
